Powerboats - 2026

The RTC uses five of the clubs powerboats as safety boats for training purposes. These are shared resources across the 96 Cadet Squadron and main club activities: racing and cruising. Instructors must ensure that they book sufficient safety boats at least 14 days ahead of each scheduled RYA training course.

The powerboats comprise 3no. Rigid Inflatable Boats (RIBs), a Dell Quay Dory and Sarah, a high-sided FRP rigid hulled boat with a reasonable beam and built-in side benches (ideal for training purposes).

All powerboats run on unleaded fuel contained in removeable red tanks. Fuel is stored remotely in a purpose-built secure steel store situated opposite Garage #1. Instructors must familiarise themselves with the green plastic filler tanks and the respective locations of the red fuel tank on each safety boat. Ensure that empty filler tanks are placed back in the store with the empty label clearly visible. The club maintain fuel stocks with periodic fill trips to a local petrol station.

Instructors must be aware of the flammable nature of fuel and read the handling precautions found in this section of the Operating Procedures.

Keys for each powerboat are held in the Office on the wall-mounted board. These include kill cords and two common sets of garage keys. Outboard engine covers must be removed from each boat after use and stored on the wooden rack inside the Club Office.

All instructors must read and familiarise themselves with the following club documents before signing-out any powerboat:

  1. SCSC Powered Vessel Policy
  2. SCSC Safety Boat Checklist

Any issues with powerboats should be notified to the course SI and documented using the Fault Reporting Procedure (blank forms available in Club Office).
