SCSC Cadet Open Report

The last weekend of June (27-29th) saw the annual South Cerney Cadet Open event. Now regarded (well by us at leas)t as THE cadet event of the year!!

Many records were broken and not just the temperatures, with a record breaking 41 boats and on the water on Saturday (unfortunately 2 boats had unavoidable commitments on Sunday so only 39 boats then), 15 of which were in the regatta fleet (the lower tier of cadets for new helms).

Saturday saw some very challenging conditions with sustained winds of 15-18 knts and some of the gusts around 25 generating more chop than we see at some sea based events!

2 races completed followed by lunch then back out for 2 more in the afternoon. Battles were intense and the lead boats were all jostling for the podium places in both gold and Silver fleets (main fleet as we call them). A few retirements either due to nerves (no surprise here in these conditions) but non were going to give up showing true cadet grit.

Straight back out for the parents race, which let's be honest is the real reason everyone comes to our open! Organised by Teya and Monty with a bit of a twist involving pineapples and a Le Mans start. Congratulations to Dickie and Harriet Davies who just managed to Hold Dom Stanilaus (Frensham Ponds) and either Mia or Max off long enough to cross the line first.

Saturday evening saw 166 for the bbq fed and watered in just over an hour followed by musical entertainment by Pip and the Bad Seed. A few jars may have been consumed (by the adults not the sailors obviously!).

Sunday brought lighter winds so after breakfast of the now legendary McMorris/Bullock/Dearsley wraps launch was delayed by about half an hour to let the breeze build a bit. 2 very competitive races followed before coming off the water for lunch and prizegiving.
