Duty Information and Training Resources

At South Cerney Sailing Club we are always looking to do things better, on and off the water.

Club Duty Guidance

The menu to the right hand side provides some information and guidance for Members on Club Duties.

In general, when choosing which duties to do, a short summary is that:

• First Race Officer (RO1)
  • Vital role for the Club's racing calendar and managers a race or number of races. Need a briefing prior to using the Committee Boat.
• Second Race Officer (RO2):
  • Raises/ lowers flags and records boat numbers and times. Can get busy but works under the guidance of the RO1. Does the anchor wrangling on Wilson (unless the RO1 is sympathetic!). Good role for understanding racing and can be quite fun.
• Safety Boat Driver:
  • Vital role for the Club. Need either RYA PB2 qualification or a checkout by the SCSC Executive that you are a competent RIB boat driver. See https://www.southcerneysailingclub.org.uk/training-resouces/safety-boat-guidance-
• Safety Boat Crew:
  • Vital role for the Club. Need to be averagely fit and mobile. Can involved pulling weights (buoys and sailors) from the water. Buoys should be lifted ALL THE WAY up to the RIB and not dragged through the water as this can drag up weed and catch fishing lines (killing fish). Crew may need to go into the water to assist a sailor so must be dressed for immersion in the Lake. Good role for understanding racing and can be quite fun. • Galley 1 & 2:
  • Gets the most appreciation. Average culinary skills needed to provide hot/ cold food to members and always a warm and dry role. Galley 1 needs a pre-brief (see: https://www.southcerneysailingclub.org.uk/training-resouces/galley-guide-and-recipes)
• Shore Duty:
  • Grounds maintenance so mostly mowing grass. Some fitness needed to push a strimmer for prune some undergrowth. A nice role in nice weather.
