SCSC Laying-Up Supper and Prize Giving
Published 09:29 on 8 Dec 2024
Despite the wild weather from Storm Darragh, many SCSC members turned up at the Clubhouse for our laying-up supper and prize giving. All the seats had sold out but some canny management by Chef Kean meant that some late requests were able to be met, as well as some members turning up for drinks and the craic.
Kean's comments on the menu were, "The hams came from local butchers at Basset - done jerk style from Jamie Oliver Xmas book; pineapple and mint salsa is a re-hash of a Nigella recipe and the slaw was a mix of peppers, fennel, red and white cabbage with a dressing made up from teriyaki with sesame, light soy, sweet chilli sauce, apple cider vinegar and a bit of light soy.
The apple cake (gf free) is a Nigella - damp apple and almond cake. We still have a glut of apples so used them in that cake and the apple and lemon tart. The Grenadian style trifle was made up using McVities Ginger cake with golden rum, diced pineapple and mango - topped with the Sainsbury's custard and then a final flourish of cream whipped with condensed milk and finished with nutmeg.
The small toddy tarts have a simple biscuit style base with a chocolate ganache with burnt butter and a shot through with golden rum. The nuts were a bit extra when I realised I had bought a bar with nuts!!"
For the prize giving, some members' step counts - John H, Phil O' and Monty in particular - increased significantly but the racing of EVERYONE was celebrated as within a series or Trophy day, there is always stiff competition between members who strive for places. Vernon's frequent collection of 3rd place glasses also showed the perseverance in turning up for every race on a trophy day or most races in a series brings rewards!
Andy H was awarded the Wychwood Trophy by the ExCo for his contribution in writing and delivering our excellent new race management software as well as the building of the auto-inflator for inflatable watercraft and much else in the year.
Paul M was awarded the Commodore's Cup for his work every week in managing the Club's books, his support to our Treasurer, his grounds maintenance efforts.
As expected, for both the Wychwood Trophy and Commodore's Cup, there were more candidates than could be recognised on the night and all Members owe a debt of thanks to those who are willing and able to lean-in.
It was a great night, enabled by Kean, Raif, Martin, Sarah in the Galley , Malcolm and Alison in the Bar and William, Jonny, Andy and Blair on Trophy management (Vernon too!).
Here are the Trophy's prior to issue with thanks Andy S to retrieving and labelling them!
.It was lovely to see the Clubhouse full and welcoming.
The Ambassador's Trophy, awarded for putting SCSC on the world stage went to the team racing in the 24hour Southport race where we came in at 10th out of 40+; an excellent result!
Here are the Trophy winners, some with too much silver to actually hold on one go so a representative sample of cups was allowed!
