Saturday 1st October saw the Solo Western Travellers series visit South Cerney. A fleet of 15 boats from 5 different clubs took to the start in a shifty blustery westerly wind.

Race Officer, Gary Morris set a course with long beats and a reach across the width of the lake.

In the first race, SCSC junior Monty Hampton showed his skills by getting away first, however he was only using the smaller 'B' plan rig and was soon swallowed up by the full rigs. The race was won by Nigel Thomas, Hill Head SC, returning to the club after 30 years away, closely followed home by Phil O'nions, South Cerney, and John Steels, Starcross Y.C.

In the second race, the fleet split off the line, those who tacked off early on to port led the fleet at the first mark and stayed there. Toby Peacock, Chew Valley Lake S.C. who had started late in the first race and finished at the back of the fleet, led everyone home. Nick Fisher, Torpoint Mosquito was second and Phil O'nions third.

After a break for lunch a reduced fleet came out in a strengthening wind for race three. This time John Steels led around the first mark and went on to take the win followed by Nigel Thomas and Steve Roberts, Torpoint Mosquito S.C. Toby Peacock had been in close contention for second and third coming into the final mark but unfortunately capsized and finished at the back of the fleet.

A further reduced fleet started the final race, with gusts now exceeding 20 knots, the race was shortened to 2 laps. John Steels again led the fleet home with Steve Roberts second and Phil O'nions third.

The Prizes:

  • 1st John Steels Starcross Y.C.
  • 2nd Nigel Thomas Hillhead S.C.
  • 3rd Phil O'nions South Cerney S.C.
