Sprint Racing Success Story

SCSC Sprints – Garry Morris
Saturday 13th July saw something new for South Cerney S C, Sprint racing, short races lasting around 15 minutes each, 8 races with no discards.
The course consisted of windward and leeward legs linked by short reaches with separate start and finish boats which meant that the Race Team of Gary Morris, George Kingsnorth and Don Pitt were kept busy, whilst the usual South Cerney shifty winds meant that Barry Wicks and Yunus Jannaty in the rescue boat were frequently having to move marks to adjust the course.
Four races back to back before lunch followed by four more after lunch then finished off with a fantastic bar-b-cue organised by Jo Neale and her family.
A total of thirteen boats took part, eight completing all races. The short course made for tight racing, starts were critical and there were a number of individual recalls and even one general recall which necessitated all competitors rounding the ends before continuing.
There were five different race winners from the eight races, at lunchtime Vernon Perkins in his Solo held a narrow lead overall from Richard Leftley in his Hadron H2, and despite two fourths in races seven and eight he held on to win overall, with Richard second, third was Ollie Wilcox in a Topper.
Full results can be seen on the club website.
“Note from Vernon: Fantastic race format and thoroughly enjoyed by all of the competitors, we will have to do this again. A great first in the first race set the day up nicely, the fluky light wind helped in the Solo. The starts were obviously critical, a couple of poor starts and you’re in 4th place as I was in the last 2 races, not concentrating. Great to see our youth members out sailing in a mixture of boats. A huge thanks to Gary and the race crew who were kept the busiest I have seen the race team for a long time. The wind was shifting everywhere so there were a few course changes, but all happened smoothly and hardly any delay between races. Gary you are invited to choose a date for the next one! The Bar-b-Que was fantastic and must remind us how fantastic the club is for social events, we need more. A huge thanks to Jo Neale and her family and helpers for a great evening. A hugely enjoyable day”
