Coaching and Training

No previous experience is necessary to crew however we would encourage inexperienced sailors to take the formal RYA training courses available at the club. RYA2 or equivalent experience is required to helm one of our club boats.

We will also be encouraging our Youth Sailors to undertake training so that they can then help coach other youth sailors, support the Cadet fleet, support sailing courses and other club activities. This could include attending the following training courses:

  • RYA Assistant Instructor
  • RYA Power Boat 2
  • First Aid

From 16 they could also do the Dinghy Instructor course. The Cadet Fleet awards a Coaching Bursary each year that any young member over 16 can apply for. The succesful recipient receives a payment to fund the required training and they are then required to perform ten duties as Assistant Coach for the Cadet Fleet.

UPDATE June 2019: Fran and Will F have now both passed their RYA Assistant Instructor and Power Boat 2 and now helping support the delivery of RYA training courses for the club.

During our Youth sessions we will not be providing regular formal training however we are expecting club members to provide coaching and this is also permitted during the club racing on a Saturday afternoon. On occasion we will bring in external trainers if there is sufficient demand.
