The Cadets are back at SCSC on a Saturday morning!

It was great to see so many families turn up bright and early on Saturday 26th for the first official Cadet training day of the 2022 season. It doesn't seem that long since we had our end of season days and our AGM, but a lot has been going on for us both at our home club and away.

This year we have had between 6 and 8 of our sailors turning out for the Chilli Dogs, with Ava helming a 200 with Nicola, Josh and Charles in a Feva, Monty in a whole range of boats, Benjy and Luca braving the Toppers and ex cadets Meg and Amelia in a 200 and then later on a Xenon. Racing and sailing alongside and with the broader club really helps develop skills and race craft, so thank you to everyone who has given time and knowledge and hopefully we can continue the trend into the summer!

In addition to our home activities, we have been travelling to a host of class events around the country over the winter months. We have been to Frensham (twice), Grafham (three times) and Itchenor for weekends such as residential coaching weekends with the RYA at Grafham, the first selector for the cadet world team, winter training at Itchenor (where a number of our sailors really began to understand the benefit of dry suits and the parents really enjoyed the club fire!) and the first open event of the season at Frensham.

It has been a great experience for everyone involved, with stronger wind and more testing conditions than we saw for pretty much the whole of last season. Everyone who took part has improved and SCSC are definitely moving up the results board at the class events, both in the gold and silver fleets as well as a strong showing in Regatta. The class overall is seeing strong numbers, especially in the all important feed in from the Regatta fleet. Rickmansworth and Pevensey have both retuned to the class, and a number of crews have stepped up to take over the back of the boat full time. SCSC often turn up with between 6 and 9 boats at away events, although for one event last autumn we had 13 at Frensham for a training day!

This month sees us back at home more than away and the chance to focus on developing the skills of all, not just our more experienced sailors. We are, however, travelling to Pevensey for the second selector on the 23rd/24th April. It is a return to the venue for cadets who have not been there for many years, which will bring some potentially challenging sea conditions for our pondies to cope with. Grafham in March with 2025knts of wind goes some way towards it, but there is nothing like the actual open sea to challenge our junior sailors. With the Nationals and Europeans both taking place in Torquay, any practice we can have on the open sea the better the sailors will be prepared.

Talking of the nationals and Europeans, preparation for the event itself are well underway and we have with a great tie back to SCSC this year. Bob Penfold, former cadet parent and long time member of the club, is involved from RTYC. With his and Gary Morris's help and guidance, we are hoping for a strong showing from SCSC to break the stranglehold Waldringfield and Frensham have had on the pointy end of the class in recent years. This years journey has already begun

We welcome new sailors, both crews and potential helms, so please do get in touch to find out what we are doing and how you and your children can be involved and share in the fun and experience. To contact Toby, click here.

See you all at the club, and out on the water!
