Solo open meeting a great success

The sky wasn’t blue and the sun wasn’t shining, in fact it was raining, but still 24 enthusiastic solo sailors arrived at South Cerney Sailing Club for the Solo open meeting, 13 club members and 11 visitors, may be it was the lure of the smell of bacon frying in the club house or the attraction of the blue waters of the Cotswold Water Park.

For the first race the wind was fairly light and variable but the fleet away first time, local boats lead and Andy Miles built a lead followed by Blair Jamieson showing that his success in Bart’s Bash was no fluke, or was it?

At the finish it was South Cerney boats in first to fourth, Guy Lonsdale in his first outing in his new boat taking third with Andy Shaw fourth then the first of the visitors, James Ross of Hamble River SC in fifth.

The course for the second race caused some confusion among the competitors as Race Officer Gary Morris set a traditional triangle sausage. The rain continued and the wind had built a little such that boats were planning on the reaches and as a gust came through on one of the dead downwind legs there were anxious faces on some of the competitors. This time it was visitors, James Ross first followed by Vanda Jowett, Littleton SC, second with Guy Lonsdale taking third and Andy Miles fourth.

After a break for lunch the fleet were greeted with glorious sunshine for the afternoon races, the third of which was another trip around the lake, this time it was Guy Lonsdale who took the honours followed by James Ross with Rob Mitchell of Chew Valley in third.

Going into the final race three points separated the top three boats, the wind had eased and the first beat was tricky, you had to get the shifts right, Vanda Jowett rounded the windward mark first and built a lead with the other top contenders fighting among themselves, eventually James Ross broke clear and hunted Vanda down, squeezing through to take first and the event, Vanda’s second was only good enough for fourth overall as Andy Miles came home third.
