Huge turnout of 37 boats as Frostbite series warms up

What a fantastic turnout for races 3 and 4 of the Frostbite series....... 37 boats on the water in race 3!

Race officer, Paul Kimmens, postponed the 1st race due to a large wind shift a couple of minutes before the start.  The committee boat was moved and course reset but by the time the race started the wind shifted back again resulting in a less than perfect course! Nethertheless close racing ensued with 3 solos filling the first three spots with Andy Miles taking the honours.

The wind settled during the race and the committee boat was moved back to its original position and the course was  changed accordingly. With 10 seconds to go to the start of the second race the charge for the line began resulting in a general recall. For the 2nd attempt at starting the race officer used the 'I' flag which had the desired effect and it was a clean start.  Lasers were at the front this time, with Al Sim taking a convincing win almost a minute ahead of Russ Harvey.

Congratulations also to both Fran Neale & Flo Hawker and Olivia & Oscar Ballentyne for completing both races - a real achievement for these young sailors, who have recently started racing, to compete in such a large fleet!

The lake looked awesome with so many boats on the water. Many thanks to second officer Annette Ewence for recording so many sail numbers and lap times and also to Andrew Wallace who did some magic in excel to help calculate the results at the end of the day. Thanks also to the safety boat crew who also chipped in with recording the finish as well, it was all hands to the pump!

Here is a short video of two of the starts. It seems that some of the Europe fleet are keen to get a head start!

A quarter of the way through the Frostbite series and Guy Lonsdale (Solo) leads on 5 points with Phil O'Nions (Blaze) on 6pts and Dave Whittle & Jackie Vale (Albacore) on 13 pts.  In the Cadet Ice Warriors trophy, Fran Neale & Flo Hawker lead on 5pts with Oscar & Olivia Ballentyne on 7 pts.  It's still all to play for!
