Winter sailing beckons!

What's the definition of a woolly jumper?  ..... Something you had to wear when your mum felt cold. Yes, it's that time of year for digging out those extra layers since, in the words of the great Billy Connolly, "there is no such thing as bad weather, only unsuitable clothing".

Not that anyone was put off today - another twenty plus competitors enjoyed some great racing. A big thanks to Richard Read (our retiring Treasurer) and his team for getting out on the water to fix some good beats and reasonably square start lines. Yes, that's all it takes to keep twenty-plus sailors happy.

There are two more Sundays in this well supported Frostbite Series folllowed by the AGM on the 15th December at 2.00pm in the clubhouse. Then back to the lake on Sunday 5th January for the ever-popular Chilli Dog winter series - 13 races; first race 11.00am, second back-to-back followed by hot soup and the traditional moan over the handicapping system. Speaking of which we have now co-opted Kevin Weatherhead onto the organisational team. If you thought the Birkett system was a head-scratcher, just wait for the Birkett-Weatherhead method. Look out for posters in the clubhouse (if Gary ever remembers to bring them).

Almost finally, there are some last minute opportunities to do an RYA Regional Race Officer course in Portland on 14/15th December (open to those who have got the Club Race Officer qualification - CRO+) and also places on the same course to do the CRO+. If interested then contact Mike Johnson asap on

Finally, finally - with Christmas coming it's time to think of those less fortunate than ourselves. Why not give that special person, who is desperate to keep up with you in the series, a bit of a break? Maybe pretend to do a rubbish tack and let them sail straight past. I certainly plan to ... there is more to life than competition.

All best .. David
