Cadet Update - 22 October 2014

Dear Cadets and Cadet Parents,

Last Weekend (18th October)

The Cadets put 4 boats on the water last weekend.  The wind was so strong that 3 of the Cadets used cut down sails.   Sophie (trainer) instructed the Cadets in rigging for strong winds and the use of a double tack instead of a gybe, which was practised many times on the blow of a whistle.  We then had a number of start-line race starts which after adding a “start-line box” made large improvements to the Cadets position at race start.  Poppy managed to demonstrate to all that a good start makes all the difference to a race out-come.  We finished the day with a pursuit race anti-clockwise around the pink buoys on the whole lake.  Feedback was that the “big pink” is a popular way of ending a training session.

This Weekend (25th October) - Stradling Youth Trophy & Season End Cadet Trophy

The weather this weekend is subject to the high pressure sitting to the south giving us fair weather with winds of 10-18mph and some sunshine so great weather for racing.

There will be 4 races over the whole day, with separate starts for the main fleet and the juniors. The races are general handicap, and don't forget to sign on.

2 races back to back at 11am for the main fleet using class flag Z, 2 races back to back at 11:05 for the juniors using class flag Y and then after lunch, 2 more races back to back with the junior start being 5 minutes later. Please see the Notice Of Race and Sailing Instructions for more details.

Can all Cadets be rigged and ready for 1000hrs and I will get the Race Officer to give a brief on the race and flags that will be used.

There are 2 races per day with 16 races in total with 8 races needed to qualify. 1st Nov - Drysuits/ Full Wetsuits

Club rules state that after 31st Oct, full length wetsuits or drysuits must be worn until 1st April. This will be important for Cadets taking part in the Frostbite series with the aim of winning the Cadet Ice Warrior trophy. To find out what you should wear over winter click here  (courtesy of Parkstone YC).

Practical Coaching Sessions for aspiring Coaches/Instructors

On Sat 1st November there is at Bowmoor SC practical sessions with RYA Instructors to learn about becoming a race coach/ dinghy instructor with practical skill sessions. You don’t have to be instructors, if they are an AI or are thinking of becoming an instructor they would also be welcome. The cost is only £15 and is an ideal opportunity to have a go to see what is it like being a coach. Contact Tony Wood, RYA Regional Dev Officer Tel: 07876 330374.

There is an additional session on Sat 8th Nov at Bristol Corinthian YC - again please contact Tony Wood.

A fantastic end to the sailing year with lots of trophies for Cadets to be awarded - the event will be at the club so please book early otherwise you will miss out because of limited tickets.
