Cadet Update - 16 October 2014

Dear Cadets and Cadet Parents,

Last Weekend (11th October 2014)

Last weekend we had 6 boats out for the last of the Autumn Trophy race days with racing delayed slightly because of no wind and then around 11am the winds filled in. We managed to get 2 races in before lunch and only 4 boats launched for race 7 after lunch and it seemed that all the cadet sailors ran out of energy for the last race as no cadets took part

The Autumn trophy this year goes to Felix and Jack Bowers so well done - you will see from the results that they stayed as a team for both race days and with 2 discards over the 8 races gave them the advantage as well as sailing well with some good recovery after a couple of less than ideal starts. More pictures here and the full set of results can be found here.

The top 3 were:

RYA PowerBoat Level 2

Congratulations to Matt, Reece and Aliya for passing their PB level 2 last weekend - Chris Mccormack the PB instructor said that they were a credit to the club and they all did very well.

We are currently sorting out the insurance situation for under 16 year old powerboat drivers as currently they are not insured to drive any rib/powered vessels at SCSC under any circumstance (that includes if accompanied by a qualified adult) - see the newsletter dated 17th April that gives further details. Once I have an update I will let everyone know.

Table Top Sale

Many thanks to Jez Folkard for managing the table top sale which had a lot of items for sale, hopefully people manage to pick up a bargain - the cadet fund made £34 in commission.

This Weekend (18th October)

A deep low is sitting out in the Atlantic giving us weather fronts that are producing all the rain and on Saturday the isobars are much closer together indicating strong winds. The forecast is therefore for showers and strong winds of 15 - 32 mph. Please come suitably dressed (spray tops, wetsuits/drysuits, gloves and hats).

Aim to be rigged and ready for a brief by Sophie at 10.00am.

Duties this weekend

  Sat 18 Oct 2014   Cadet Coaching 18
  Safety 1 09:00 Keith Nicholls
  Safety 2 09:00 Wendy Nicholls
  Galley 1 09:00 Nigel McMahon
  Galley 2 09:00 Henrietta Schurch
  Responsible Adult 09:00 Graham Redfern
  Trainer 09:00 Sophie Goodrich
  Assistant Trainer 09:00 Scott Ballentyne

Due to the strong forecast winds, we may have to ask another suitably qualified adult to go on the safety rib so please bring along your wet weather gear.

This weekend we have a RYA Level 1 course on with 10 people on (include 3 cadet sailors doing their Youth level 1), 420's for all (last weekend we had around 6 people) and then normal afternoon handicap racing. For the galley we will have to cater for around 40-60 people at a guess.

25th October - SCSC Cadet AGM

We need to start to think about the various roles we have and how to fill them. At the moment I am not going to stand again as the Cadet Captain - the key ones are Race Coaches and Race Officers. I am happy to discuss what these roles involve and the forum page is here.

Looking to start at 1030am (once the sailors have launched).

25th October - End of Season Trophy Race

Cadet helm and crew who achieve the lowest point score on the final race day of the season (25 October).

Dinghy Instructor Course

The DI course is now full with 3 Cadets (Lizzy, Catriona and Aliya) and 2 Cadet parents (Scott and Yunus) so next year hopefully may mean that we should have greater flexibility when scheduling the coach duties..

26th Oct - Ice Warrior Trophy

The Cadet Ice Warrior Trophy is a closely contested trophy and the cadet races will be part of the main club Frostbite Series that starts on Sun 26th Oct to Sun 154th Dec. There are 2 races per day with 16 races in total with 8 races needed to qualify. Remember, any cadets entering will require dedicated safety cover so parents will have to volunteer - this is additional to your required duties.

1st Nov - Drysuits/ Full Wetsuits

Club rules state that after 31st Oct, full length wetsuits or drysuits must be worn until 1st April. This will be important for Cadets taking part in the Frostbite series with the aim of winning the Cadet Ice Warrior trophy.

Practical Coaching Sessions for aspiring Coaches/Instructors

On Sat 1st November there is at Bowmoor SC practical sessions with RYA Instructors to learn about becoming a race coach/ dinghy instructor with practical skill sessions. You don’t have to be instructors, if they are an AI or are thinking of becoming an instructor they would also be welcome. The cost is only £15 and is an ideal opportunity to have a go to see what is it like being a coach. Contact Tony Wood, RYA Regional Dev Officer Tel: 07876 330374.

There is an additional session on Sat 8th Nov at Bristol Corinthian YC - again please contact Tony Wood.

7/8/9 Nov - Safety Boat Course (PB Level 3)

There is a Safety Boat course scheduled for 7/8/9 Nov at the club at a cost of only £80. This is an excellent opportunity to really build on your PB level 2.

29 November - End of Year Prize Giving/Tudor Feast

A fantastic end to the sailing year with lots of trophies for Cadets to be awarded - the event will be at the club so please book early otherwise you will miss out because of limited tickets.

Pam is now taking bookings for the ANNUAL PRIZE GIVING/TUDOR FEAST. Date: 29th November. Time: 6.30 for 7pm meal. Venue: Clubhouse SCSC. Cost: £20 per adults and cadet sailors of any age for only £12.50. Some Ale and wine available on each table included in the price.

A Tudor Feast consists of several "removes" and involves a large number of dishes. I advise "eat very little that day before attending".

Yunus
