Cadet Update - 10 October 2014

Dear Cadets and Cadet Parents,

Last Weekend (4th October)

We got four boats (9 sailors) together for a morning sail, which apart from the rain was perfect weather for our exercises.  The more experienced Cadets spent time doing rudderless sailing; this was Zack and Toby's first time and after spinning around a few times they did really well sailing a triangular course. Olivia and Oscar, being one of their first attempts at helming, and Esme whose first time it was crewing, also progressed a lot over the session and by the end were sailing more efficiently and completing the course. When the Solo event started we moved the course to the 'little lake' where we swapped helms and crews finishing off with a crews' race where the helm instructed them. Well done to Amelia who won under Hannah's instruction, and Felix who gave her a good run for her money the help of Reece.

This Weekend (11 October) - Autumn Trophy Race Day (2 of 2) & Table Top Sale

A Cadet table top sale is to be held on Sat 11th Oct. I suggest a selling fee of 10% with a max £5 per family selling items payable to the Cadet Squadron on the day. I will open this up to Main Club as well and all the monies raised from the entry fees will go to the Cadet Squadron fund. Thank you to Ruth Folkard who will be organising and managing this on the day. Please bring along your sailing related clothing/equipment clearly labelled with your surname and price.

The weather forecast this weekend is for light winds of around 7mph with sunshine - please ensure you are dressed warm because although the sun may be out, it will feel rather cool - I suggest bring along hats, gloves and spray tops.

I will be running race day 2 for the Autumn Trophy which had to be postponed from 27th Sept. Can all Cadets please start to pair up and bear in mind that you should ideally pair up as you did on Sat 23 Aug as the Autumn Trophy is awarded based on the overall results over the 2 race days.

Please use the forum page to start letting me know who is turning up. Anyone who needs a crew or helm can advertise here or worst case on the day we will pair people up.

4th Oct - Feedback from Frensham Pond Training

Meriel commented on last week's Frensham Pond training "Jackie and I were very impressed by the friendliness and helpfulness of the Frensham SC.  The organisers were very welcoming, and made sure that we had all the assistance that we required in order to find the Club boat that we were hiring, and rig it."

From a Cadet's perspective, Izzy commented "I enjoyed meeting the new people. They were very friendly and gave us some helpful advice on sailing. The weather wasn't great and it was very rainy, but I had a good time in spite of that!"

This hopefully highlights that going way to other clubs is a fantastic opportunity to meet new people and gain some great sailing experience so I encourage you to take the opportunity where possible.

UKNCCA Squad Selection Success for SCSC Cadets

As you are aware that the squad selection happened over the last 2 months and SCSC have had success with Aliya/Aqil achieving a place in the National Squad and Harry/Alice achieving a place in the Junior Development Squad. Well done to all on a fantastic achievement.

25th October - SCSC Cadet AGM

We need to start to think about the various roles we have and how to fill them. At the moment I am not going to stand again as the Cadet Captain - the key ones are Race Coaches and Race Officers. I am happy to discuss what these roles involve and the forum page is here.

Looking to start at 1030am (one the sailors have launched).

25th October - End of Season Trophy Race

Cadet helm and crew who achieve the lowest point score on the final race day of the season (25 October).

Dinghy Instructor Course

I have 1 space remaining on the DI course here at SCSC which I have emailed everyone about, if you are interested or know of anyone who would be then please let me know.

26th Oct - Ice Warrior Trophy

The Cadet Ice Warrior Trophy is a closely contested trophy and the cadet races will be part of the main club Frostbite Series that starts on Sun 26th Oct to Sun 154th Dec. There are 2 races per day with 16 races in total with 8 races needed to qualify. Remember, any cadets entering will require dedicated safety cover so parents will have to volunteer - this is additional to your required duties.

1st Nov - Drysuits/ Full Wetsuits

Club rules state that after 31st Oct, full length wetsuits or drysuits must be worn until 1st April. This will be important for Cadets taking part in the Frostbite series with the aim of winning the Cadet Ice Warrior trophy.

Practical Coaching Sessions for aspiring Coaches/Instructors

On Sat 1st November there is at Bowmoor SC practical sessions with RYA Instructors to learn about becoming a race coach/ dinghy instructor with practical skill sessions. You don’t have to be instructors, if they are an AI or are thinking of becoming an instructor they would also be welcome. The cost is only £15 and is an ideal opportunity to have a go to see what is it like being a coach. Contact Tony Wood, RYA Regional Dev Officer Tel: 07876 330374.

There is an additional session on Sat 8th Nov at Bristol Corinthian YC - again please contact Tony Wood.

7/8/9 Nov - Safety Boat Course (PB Level 3)

There is a Safety Boat course scheduled for 7/8/9 Nov at the club at a cost of only £80. This is an excellent opportunity to really build on your PB level 2.

29 November - End of Year Prize Giving/Tudor Feast

A fantastic end to the sailing year with lots of trophies for Cadets to be awarded - the event will be at the club so please book early otherwise you will miss out because of limited tickets.

Pam is now taking bookings for the ANNUAL PRIZE GIVING/TUDOR FEAST. Date: 29th November. Time: 6.30 for 7pm meal. Venue: Clubhouse SCSC. Cost: £20 per person, Under 14yrs £12.50. Some Ale and wine available on each table included in the price.

A Tudor Feast consists of several "removes" and involves a large number of dishes. I advise "eat very little that day before attending".
